Florida Safety Course: Frequently Asked Questions

It is a lifetime certification. But you can lose the certificate if you violate the law!
Of course not. You may complete the course at your own pace. You have 90 days to study the material and complete the final exam.
Yes, after each chapter, you’ll need to pass a short unit quiz (minimal score of 80%) to proceed to the next chapter. If you fail a unit quiz, you must restudy the unit and retake the quiz until you pass. You can fail as often as you like, but don’t worry – the quizzes are simple if you watch the videos.
At the end of the online course, you´ll need to take the final exam, where you should achieve a score of at least 80%. You have unlimited attempts to pass the exam. But don´t worry – most of our students pass the exam on the first try.
There is no minimum age requirement to take this online course and get certified.
- To operate a personal watercraft (PWC) in Florida, a person must be at least 14 years of age
- To rent a personal watercraft (PWC) in Florida, a person must be at least 18 years of age
- It is unlawful for a person to knowingly allow a person under 14 years of age to operate a personal watercraft (PWC).
Yes. All states that require boater education certification will recognize your certification due to a NASBLA-approved course. This is known as “reciprocity.”
Yes, you can, and you should if you are underway in Florida waters. You do not have to be a resident of Florida to take this online course.
Yes, there are some exempts, where you dont need to obtain a boater education card:
- A person operating on a private lake or pond.
- A person licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard as a master of a vessel.
- An operator who is accompanied onboard by a person who is least 18 years old and possesses the required Boating Safety Education Identification Card, provided that person is attendant to and responsible for the safe operation of the vessel.
- An operator who is accompanied onboard by a person who is exempt from the educational requirements, provided that person is attendant to and responsible for the safe operation of the vessel.
- A nonresident who has in his or her possession proof that he or she has completed an approved boating safety course or equivalency examination from another state.
- A person is operating a vessel within 90 days after the purchase of that vessel and has available for inspection aboard that vessel a bill of sale.
- A person operating a vessel within 90 days after completing an approved boating safety course, and has a photographic I.D. and a boater education course completion certificate.
If you are born on or after January 1, 1988 you must have a boater education identification card and photographic ID to operate a motorized vessel – including PWC – of 10 horsepower or more in Florida.
If you want to rent a boat in Florida, you can get a Florida Boat Rental Temporary Certificate. It is valid for 90 days. But we recommend you get certified for the official Boater Education I.D. Card. It is nearly the same effort but brings you a lifetime certification.
Once you pass the final exam, you will be able to print the Temporary Boater Education Certificate. This is your proof of online course completion. With that, you can go boating. This certificate EXPIRES 90 days after course completion.
In case you selected to receive a physical copy of the Boating Safety Education I.D. Card, it will usually arrive within 4-5 weeks after you complete the online course. However, if you opted to receive an electronic Boating Safety Education I.D. Card, it will be emailed to you at your registered email within 2–4 days after completing the course.
